6th Annual Parade & Festival for the United Nations International Day of Peace

Honokaa, Hawaii hosts the premiere Peace Day event in the State of Hawaii, and the only event of its kind worldwide, a parade and festival demonstrating unity in support of peace, compassion and awareness of interdependence. New this year, parade steps off at 10 AM on Saturday, September 22, 2012. Hundreds of participants from over 30 groups will perform or exhibit in a unique parade, described as a “moving stage.” The festival which follows will include entertainment and over 40 vendors and exhibitors.

Day of Mindfulness, Forgiveness and Personal Peace.

Reverend Mary David (Mililani Hongwanji Buddhist Temple, Oahu) and Ms. Elizabeth Reveley (Hawaii Forgiveness Project) lead this session from 9 am to 3 pm, Friday, September 21 (Peace Day) at the Waianuhea Bed & Breakfast, Ahualoa/Honokaa on the Big Island. “Mindfulness” is a practice of paying careful attention to what is happening in the present moment—including sensations, sounds, smells, visual images, emotions and thoughts. It can be done any time, while engaged in any kind of activity. A vegetarian lunch will be catered by the staff at Waianuhea (“Fodor's Choice”).

Read for Peace

"Read for Peace" agenda will be produced in partnership with “Friends of Honokaa Library.” A conversation based on Thich Nhat Hanh's book, Peace Is Every Step, will be held at the Honoka'a library Monday, September 17 at 5:30 PM.

Student Peace Poster Contest

Students and teachers from around the globe will be urged to express their own interpretation of this year’s Peace Poster Contest theme: “Aloha Peace.” Cash and other prizes will be awarded for various age divisions, plus “Best of Show.”Instructions and Entry Forms coming soon.

    SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 22nd

    10:00 am The Parade! Stepping off from Honoka'a High School, along Mamane Street and up to the County Sports Complex. Various stops and performances at narrator stands along the route.

    9:15 am The start of the 2nd Annual 5K Run for Peace. This year there is a new route and we have added a "2-Mile Walk" for participants.  Click below for more information:

    11:00 pm to 2:00 pm - Peace Day Festival follows at Honoka`a Sports Complex. Numerous food booths, crafts and community groups, live entertainment onstage, ringing of the Peace Bell and release of doves. Large silent auction to benefit the Peace Committee.
